Curtains HOME

Curtains HOME

Five reasons curtains and blinds can make your house warmer and more elegant

Curtains and blinds are designed to look elegant, and work well in almost any environment. Whether your window is tiny, or large, you can find a gorgeous design and type of shutter, blind, or curtain that fits your need.

"    Curtains come in a range of styles and designs, colours, textures - in fact if it's a material, you can make a curtain out of it. There are various types of curtains from tabbed top, to spaghetti (the ones that usually stand in doorways, with beads, or straight pieces of rope, string, or thread, or even metal chains) to slide and glide (special curtain rails).  The first thing you need to look at is the size if your window, and whether you can fit a rail above, or inside - bearing in mind that fitting a curtain rail inside a window will leave a gap at the top and will have to be cut exactly to the windowsill before, it's better to fit the curtain rail above the window wherever possible.

Once you've decided that you can choose your curtain type and design - you'll need curtains with pencil pleats for certain looks, and tabbed curtains or curtain loops to hang your curtains from.

"    Blinds are an elegant solution to the problem of light leakage - blackout blinds do exactly that - and block out the light - they are ideal for children's rooms as they make sure the room is dark enough for them to sleep. Another great reason for blackout blinds is if you work nightshift. Other blind types can create a different look, such as roman blinds, which are commonly used in bathrooms and kitchens. They can be decorated to look several different kinds of ways, from unmoving, ribboned types, to functional ones that are decorated to function properly. The one drawback with blinds is that they can be hard to wash, or clean, so in high traffic regions, they can get dirty very quickly.

Understanding the Order of Home Improvement

Understanding the Order of Home Improvement

Awoken to the wonderful sound of hundreds, perhaps thousands of singing birds, an exciting new day has dawned. Yawning, stretching and shaking away the sleep, the first stop is the kettle switch to get that all important first cuppa of the day underway. Then it's a tour of the house in the ritual that is opening all the curtains to let the light of the brand new morning come streaming in.
If it's my turn to perform the curtain opening ceremony, you can rest assured it doesn't take very long at all, I am a guy after all and pulling each curtain as far to the side as possible is really all it involves. However, if it was my turn with the curtains, there will, without fail be a secondary and far more important ceremony.
My wife will take one horrified look at all the skew-whiff curtains and set about carefully rearranging them all, sometimes closing them completely again to ensure perfect drape and hang levels are attained! You see, sometimes what us blokes don't understand (and perhaps that's a good thing) is that there is an art and a skill involved in making the home look nice.
My wife knows full well that it doesn't matter how beautiful or expensive the curtains may be, that if they are just indiscriminately pulled across the window, they might as well be just any old bits of cloth. She understands that for the curtains to attain their full potential they have to interact carefully and gently with the curtain poles. After all, without the poles, the curtains themselves would have little reason to exist and would certainly have nowhere to flourish.
So, when it comes to window decoration, accessories and adornments, the curtain poles rule! They are the king and queen of window space and deserve the respect of any home improvement guru and homemaker.
Having established the respect that is due, the world of curtain poles takes on a whole new complexion when you realise just how important they are to get right. There is so much variety and choice that decision making becomes of paramount importance. Wooden curtain poles, metal ones or bay window poles and their size are just some of the initial decisions to be made before you even go down the route of style, colour and decoration.

It's important to take your furniture, bedding and so on into consideration when choosing your curtains, as they can set the overall tone of the room. For example, if you're wanting to create a romantic tone within your room, red, bold, thick, heavy curtains may do just the trick. Equally, if you're looking for a fresh, contemporary, whimsical look then lighter, floaty, see-through curtains will add to the statement on the whole.

The size of your window is also an important factor, as some curtain styles may not look right in certain sized windows. If you are opting for a bold, heavy curtain, this may not look right in a small window; whereas if you were placing these in front of French doors or a large window then this will add to the overall grandeur.

That's why, having curtains that are made-to-measure ensures that the curtains are fitting into the room décor you desire, and not you fitting your room décor in around the manufactured sizes of the curtains.

Stop Mold Growing On Your Shower Curtain

Stop Mold Growing On Your Shower Curtain

A shower curtain is a boon in preventing water getting all over the bathroom floor, however it does have one big disadvantage; the likelihood of icky mold growing on it. To prevent this from happening to your shower curtain, this article discusses some ways to prevent mold and mildew build up.

The first place to start is with the type of shower curtain you buy. There are curtains on the market now that have been treated with a specific anti-mold treatment that prevents the build up of mold on the curtain. This saves you time on cleaning them and having to use harsh chemicals in the bathroom.

You could also buy a shower curtain liner which fits in between the bath and the shower curtain itself. By having the liner sitting on the inside edge of the bath and the shower curtain hanging outside the bath, no water will be splashed onto the shower curtain, keeping it reasonably dry. This will prevent any mold building up on it as mold needs moisture to grow.

If you use a vinyl shower curtain, you can soak it in a vinegar solution. The acidic nature of the vinegar prevents the growth of mold. Then as a preventative measure you could make up a spray bottle with 70% vinegar to 30% water and spray that along the bottom of the shower curtain each time you finished in the shower.

You can also use a strong salt water solution to soak a vinyl shower curtain in for a an hour or so before hanging. This prevents mold from forming and you can maintain a mold free shower curtain by spraying the bottom of the shower curtain in a similar way as you would the vinegar solution.

Always make sure you fully draw your shower curtain across the shower rod to help it dry out as soon as you've finished your shower. Leaving it scrunched up together creates an opportunistic environment for mold to grow in all that moisture. It's also a good idea to open a window or use an exhaust fan to help get the humidity out of the room and get the air circulating. This will help the shower curtain dry out quicker, and the quicker it dries the less chance it has of developing mold on it.
